Yhe UK is certainly not well known for its array of beautiful beaches. Many of them are rocky and covered in pebbles and others are rough and the water cold. However, for a more sandy option and with some world class surf, look to the beaches of Newquay to suit your needs. Here are five of the top ones to consider.

Watergate Bay beach: This beach is privately owned and is ideal for extreme sports. The Extreme Sports Academy operate here so you can get any sort of beach sport you are looking for from kitesurfing, buggysurfing, windsurfing and just plain old surfing. This is the closest beach to the airport and when the tide is out it stretches over a mile long.

Whipsiderry beach; The thing to remember about this beach is that to get to it you are required to descend about a hundred steep and rickety steps, so its not ideal for those with a lot of equipment or perhaps carrying babies of small children. There are also no facilities here, however when the tide is low there are a number of interesting caves that you can explore. Just make sure so mind your footing on the steps when they are slippery.

For a family day out Porth beach is most probably your best bet. This is a large sandy beach that offers wonderful walks and views as well as great facilities. There are car parks to allow easy access onto the beach, as well as numerous little shops and bar from which you can get some food and drink. There is also a little putting green and crazy golf in a field above for the kids to enjoy.

Lusty Glaze beach: This is another private beach and is used mainly for the use of lifesaving courses. There is also a great high-wire for you to wire across the beach which is the highest in Europe, so for the thrill seekers this is the place to be. The beach also has some good surf on the right days and a great little bar to chill out at as the sun goes down.

Fistral beach: This is a world famous surf beach with a surfing centre and a multitude of different surfing shops. For anyone looking to learn to surf or practice their skills then this is perfect. Make sure however that you look at the calender and come along on the right day as this will be largely closed off regularly for surfing contests.

There are many other beaches in the area but these are five of the most interesting.
