There are very few areas in the UK that can compare to the Lake District in beauty. If you are planning a vacation in this part of the country then the best town to base yourself in is Kendal in Cumbria. Here you will find accommodation that suits virtually very budget.
Often described as the southern entrance to the Lake District, the town is situated only ten miles from the world famous Lake Windermere. If you have your own transport then you can also arrange trips to other lakes that are further afield. Lake Windermere has plenty of activities to keep any visitor occupied. You could try your hand at boating on the lake or if you are lucky there may be a special event with water based races and competitions.
Of course the main reason why people choose to come to Cumbria and Kendal specifically is to make full use of the many walking trails in the National Park. There are plenty of hikes that can lead you deep into the Lake District.
If you are planning a long trek then be sure that you are fully prepared. The weather in the Lakes is notorious for its rapid change. You may set off on a nice sunny morning but by lunch time find yourself engulfed in thick cold fog or cloud. Always inform your hotel or lodge of your plans. If you are new to outdoor activities then choose a guesthouse that can arrange a guide or tour.
The town has a population of nearly thirty thousand, though in the summer months this swells vastly with visitor numbers. There are various interesting sights within Kendal itself. This includes plenty of historical buildings including two castles, old public houses, fine restaurants, and a warm friendly ambience. Kendal is blessed with a fine location and views that can inspire even the coldest heart.
In the past, the major industry in this part of Cumbria would have been wool. The hills are excellent grazing for flocks of sheep, and the many streams and rivulets flowing down the valley sides allowed water mills to spring up to provide power to the weavers.
Today the industry is in decline though it is still possible to pick up a few homespun items as souvenirs. If you ask a typical Yorkshire-man why Kendal is famous they will immediately tell you 'cake'. The townspeople make a delicious mint cake that must be sampled on any visit.
