Malvern - Worcestershire, is a town of Celtic beginnings that means "bare hill", but it was in the 18th century that Malvern really boomed when it was a favorite inland spa town of royalty and lay men alike. The town is also known as Great Malvern and Malvern Spa and makes a great spot for a romantic weekend away or stress busting mini break.
The town of Malvern gained popularity for its spas, which are known to have very pure waters. In its hey day as a spa town it welcomed such esteemed guests as Queen Victoria who cam seeking out the healthful powers of its waters.
Prior to that the town was best known for its Norman period church of St Mary and St Michael. For those interested in architecture the church has England's finest examples of medieval tiles that were hand made by the monks of the attached monastery. The church is also known for its splendid stained glass, which is said to be a rival to York cathedral's own.
The Little Malvern Court Priory Church, which was constructed in the 14th century also has beautiful stained glass windows, which are historically interesting for depicting images of 15th century royal family members. For those who are interested in architecture, there are some stunning examples of medieval through to Victorian buildings that are scattered about town.
The Malvern Museum is a gorgeous little museum that is housed in a 14th century gatehouse at the Malvern Abbey. It is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except Wednesdays. Here you will find fascinating archeological finds from the area that date back to the iron age. There are exhibits that showcase life in Malvern throughout different times in history. There is also a focus on natural history, which may have something to do with Charles Darwin's connection to the town.
Since the town has a long history as a spa town, you cannot come to Malvern and not sample the pure waters of its springs. St Anne's Well is fountain that is housed in a building dating back to 1815. It makes a lovely outing especially when combined with lunch at the nearby cafe in the complex. Further up into the Malvern Hills you will find the Worcestershire Beacon, which is a great place to view the surrounding hills and countryside from the viewing platform and telescopes.
There are many other wells that can be visited in the area and some of them include:Holy Well, Morris Well, Temperance Fountain, Enigma Fountain, Jubilee Fountain and Evendine Spring. Malvern - Worcestershire offers some lovely walking tour opportunities in the Malvern Hills and makes a charming getaway spot.
